چکیده

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS To test whether therapeutic effects of botulinum toxin A on patient- specific keloid tissue can be reproduced on the cellular level. Specifically, effects on cell proliferation and expression of growth factors and cytokines relevant for wound healing were to be tested. STUDY DESIGN Experimental study including patient specific cell cultures of keloids. METHODS Patient-specific keloid tissue was tested in a cell culture model for effects of botulinum toxin incubation on cell proliferation and expression of the following cytokines and growth factors: IL-6 (interleukin-6), VEGF (vascular endothelial growth factor), TGF-β (transforming growth factor-β). RESULTS None of the tested parameters of human keloid tissue were affected by botulinum toxin A incubation. CONCLUSION The present study does not add evidence to suggest a significant therapeutic role of botulinum toxin injections for the treatment of keloids. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE N/A.

Botulinum toxin A for the treatment of keloids.

INTRODUCTION Keloids are the result of excessive scar tissue formation. Besides their poor aesthetic appearance, keloids can be associated with severe clinical symptoms such as pain, itching, and rigidity. Unfortunately, most therapeutic approaches remain clinically unsatisfactory. Recently, injections with botulinum toxin A (BTA) were proposed for the treatment of established keloids in a clin...

The Effects of Botulinum Toxin A on Collagen Synthesis, Expression of MMP (matrix metalloproteinases)-1,2,9 and TIMP (tissue inhibitors of metalloproteinase)-1 in the Keloid Fibroblasts

Keloids are characterized by excessive extracelluar matrix (ECM) deposition such as collagen, fibronectin, elastin, and proteoglycans in the dermis. Recently, the use of botulinum toxin A (BTXA) in the treatment of keloids have had good results. To investigate the therapeutic effect of BTXA on the keloids, we evaluated the mRNA expression of collagen type I, type III, MMP (matrix metalloprotein...

RAC Activity in Keloid Disease

BACKGROUND Keloids are characterized by excess collagen deposition within the dermis. Although the exact cause of the potentially overactive fibroblasts has yet to be elucidated, many etiological possibilities have been suggested. As fibroblasts originating from keloids appear to have an increased migration and proliferation rate, cell-signaling studies examining these factors may offer an oppo...

Double Sandwich ELISA Modified Method for the Detection of Clostridium Botulinum Type E

Background & Objective: A very small amount of botulinum toxin can cause death and on the other hand, there is no cure for its poison other than antitoxin. Therefore, a diagnostic method that can detect very small amounts of botulinum toxin in a short time is very important. In this study, rapid and accurate detection of botulinum toxin type E has been performed with the double sandwich ELISA m...
